Day 17 of my 90-day comeback challenge is all about friendships and their immense importance in our lives. I share my five golden rules for good friendships and how these relationships have shaped my life over the last few months. In this article we discuss how you can build and maintain deep, valuable friendships.

The Importance of Friendships

Looking back at the past eight months, I realize how essential good friends and my partner have been for me. Without them, I probably would have given up at some point. You need people who listen to you without any ulterior motives, who support you and are honest with you. These deep relationships are a fundamental part of our happiness.

My Five Rules for Good Friendships

  1. Integrity Integrity means that I can trust my friends to act in my best interest. It’s not about always telling the truth but doing the right thing for me, even when it’s uncomfortable.
  2. Growth Mindset Friends with a growth mindset have positive energy and direction in life. It’s more important that they are dynamic and goal-oriented than that they already have all the successes to show.
  3. Candor Honest conversations and constructive feedback are essential. Good friends tell you not only what you want to hear but also what you need to hear.
  4. Selflessness In good friendships, it’s about giving without expecting anything in return. You should be ready to support your friends without constantly keeping score.
  5. Acceptance It’s important that you and your friends accept each other as you are. You shouldn’t feel like you have to put on a facade. True friendships are based on authenticity and mutual respect.

Final Thoughts

When you apply these points to your own friendships, you’ll probably find that you don’t have many truly good friends. But that’s perfectly fine. It’s not about having thousands of superficial relationships but a few deep and meaningful ones.
